Welcome new students!

Welcome to both our new RTS-Charlotte students as well as those returning from last semester. We invite new students to get their library card and a 5-minute tour before the end of August, so we can start to get to know you.

Regular hours (including evenings) will commence the week of Aug. 29. Until then, we are open only during the day.

New Life in the Wasteland: 2 Corinthians on the cost of Christian ministry

This small book by Doug Kelly was published in 2003, but has not received nearly the attention that it deserves, perhaps due to the smaller publisher. This is one book on pastoral ministry though that every pastor ought to have, much along the lines of William Still’s The Work of the Pastor (Rev. Still was an influence on Dr. Kelly and is one of three men mentioned in the dedication). (continued here…)

Summer reading?

Hopefully many of you will have time to read something this summer that you’ve been wanting to read, but have not had time for. As always, I encourage people to read good fiction to keep the fires of your imagination stoked. I recently read George Macdonald’s The Princess and the Goblin, a great example of the Victorian fantasy literature which inspired C.S. Lewis and others.

But plan to read some theology that will keep the wheels in the brain cranking. I am planning to read Risking the Truth, a collection of essays dealing with how to handle error in the church, which sadly is always a pertinent issue. This would be a good book to start discussions in session meetings.

Summer hours

The RTS-Charlotte Library summer hours have begun:

Mon-Thur – 8 AM- 5 PM
Fri – 8 AM – 4 PM

We will be closed May 30 (Memorial Day) & July 4 (Independence Day). Normal hours will resume in the fall semester.

E-book lending

Amazon has finally – finally! – agreed to allow lending of e-books with the Kindle – http://bit.ly/hGW3e4. The Nook from Barnes & Noble has long allowed such lending (which is why I bought the Nook and not the Kindle). The whole e-book lending process is going to be in flux for some time as publishers are the ones in the drivers seat as to how long they will allow their titles to be ‘loaned’ – libraries who purchase such titles will be bound to the licensing agreement of the publishers. That is partly why the RTS Libraries have not jumped on the e-book buying bandwagon yet. The other reason is that Christian publishers, in typical fashion, are the last to catch up to technology trends, and there just are not large numbers of useful Christian academic books in e-book format yet.

By the way, some of the questions on our current library survey are about e-book issues (see below), so if you want to have some input on our future decisions, fill out a survey!!!

More online books

In addition to Google books, which we’ve mentioned previously, you can also search for older titles at www.archive.org/details/texts. All of these should be out-of-copyright works – the only thing to be aware of is that many of these texts will have been reformatted from the original, which means you have to cite them in a paper as an electronic text (see Turabian, 7th ed. for guidance). In Google books, most of the titles are in PDF format, which preserves the original format and allows for regular citation. Regardless of format, it is wonderful to have so many titles at your fingertips, many of which would be nearly impossible to get your hands on otherwise.

Library shelving

In order to maximize our limited shelving space, the RTS-C Library will be removing all books over 8 inches tall. This will allow us to adjust shelves more closely together. More details will follow.
