We’re happy to report that Daniel Wells, contrary to popular reports, apparently does have a life outside of working in the library as a student worker – he is officially engaged!  Congratulations, Daniel!  FYI, he says the whole campus will be invited to the wedding…check back for more details.

Church history resources

A reminder to those taking History of Christianity I this week – many resources can be found full-text online at places such as www.ccel.org, where the entire Church Fathers set and more is available.  While you may not want to read a lengthy section online, one benefit is that you can perform keyword searches of the texts online.   Another interesting resource is the Hall of Church History, which points you to a number of good resources from around the web.  Here in the Library, most church history works will be in the “BR” section, with some also in the “BX” range.  Let us know how we can help you find what you need.

The benefits of reading biographies…

In the midst of a seminary curriculum, you won’t be asked to read many biographies (in fact, it’s rare in undergrad disciplines too).  I’ve come to realize how impoverished I was for not reading more biographies, as I’ve tried to read 3 or 4 each year in the last few years.  Dr. Al Mohler suggests some good Christian bios at his blog here.    Dr. Iain Murray has just released a collection of short bios in his new book, Heroes. I would challenge you to also read well-written biographies of unbelievers as well though, for there is much to learn even there.   While you may not have much time for such reading while in seminary, make it a goal to read at least 2 biographies a year once you’re out in ministry, for it will give you a better perspective on the world as well as your own faith, and will also supply many illustrations for teaching and preaching.  – Ken Mc.

If you have not tried this, you really should (he says in his best Billy Mays voice…).  The best change is that now you have access to your files from any computer, not just one.  Bravo!

George MacDonald resources

This site is amazing – http://www.online-literature.com/george-macdonald/ .  If you want to read some of his works online, they’re all here.  Not sure I’d want to read his longer works that way, but he has many shorter writings as well.  MacDonald was a formative influence on the writing of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien and perhaps other people with lots of initials for their name…
